About Us

Everything we do is focused on sustainability, net-zero objectives & in creating a positive environmental & social impact.

ep architects operate throughout the South of England, mainly focused, though not exclusively, on the Central Southern Region of the UK.  We adopt innovative, green, and sustainable techniques from the early stages of our architectural design.  This includes the re-use and re-purpose of existing materials and employing the latest regenerative techniques to ensure a positive and sustainable building design and outcome.

In addition to providing a full architectural service, we are able to guide clients through all aspects of planning, master planning, and the detailed processes required to obtain permission, detail, and deliver projects of varying scale and complexity.  This includes advising on budget, materials and renewable energy strategies.

ep architects use natural, sustainable, locally sourced materials, employing local skills and crafts wherever feasible.  We provide unbiased and professional solutions with whole life value and pay-back, guiding clients through the options to achieve the best, most efficient, most appropriate and cost-effective solution for your needs.

ep architects’ creative, experienced and multi-disciplined team take great pride in developing relationships and working with trusted suppliers and contractors who we can rely upon to take equal pride in the client’s asset, investment, and vision.

Our expertise is underlined by the extensive experience and outstanding academic excellence of our architecture team.  All architects in the ep architects team are fully qualified as MSc in Sustainable Construction and have collectively 75 years of experience in this increasingly important field.

We are qualified in Building Physics and Passivhaus Design; this expertise will help realise our clients’ aspirations for buildings that have excellent thermal comfort, air-quality and are low energy-use.

A word from our Directors…

Gary Wilburn

Managing Director

Having lived and worked in Hampshire for over 30 years and wishing to focus on Positive Impact, Regenerative and Net-Zero projects, I formed ep architects in September 2020 from offices in Romsey.  Working with our trusted and longstanding contacts as well as new clients and consultants, we are designing and delivering energy-efficient solutions for new-build projects and existing buildings.

My background in Mixed-use developments, Retail, Hospitality and Commercial Architecture complements James’ experience in the Education, Residential, and Public sectors and we are enjoying the challenge of designing sustainable buildings and developments for and with our ever-expanding clients.

I am passionate about sustainable and low energy construction and in creating a positive environmental and social impact.  My roles as Chair of the AECB (Association for Environment Conscious Building) and Chair of the Green Halo, enable me to develop these key themes and best practices with members who share these objectives.

I love all manner of sports and played rugby in the North of England, the Midlands, London Leagues and locally for Petersfield and Romsey.

James Lemanis

Director of Architecture

In my 21-year architectural career, I have had the fortune to design and deliver a variety of buildings and have attempted to implement core sustainable principles throughout.  During this time, I have trained as an architect, building physicist and Passivhaus designer.

When the opportunity arose to collaborate with Gary and our colleagues within the Group, I had no hesitation because I knew that we were going to create something special: wellbeing, energy-efficiency and sustainability are the foundations of everything we do at ep architects.

We guide our clients through the design, planning and building process, advising on budget, materials and renewable energy strategies and will help realise our clients’ aspirations with buildings that have excellent thermal comfort, air-quality and are low energy-use.

Outside of work, I follow my local football team, newly promoted to the Premier League, Southampton Football Club.

Tom Barnes

Design Director

Over the past 16 years, I have built my career as an architectural professional working across interior architecture, fit-out, and FF&E design, delivering complex projects within the education, public-sector, and commercial sectors. A significant part of my work has focused on the design and delivery of learning environments, contributing to more than 200 schools across the UK and helping to improve the spaces in which children learn and thrive.

My interest in sustainability and low-carbon design was shaped through my studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology, which provided a strong practical and theoretical grounding in environmentally responsible building design. This experience has informed my contribution to the Department for Education’s GenZero Pathfinder programme, supporting the development of practical strategies for decarbonising future education infrastructure.

Joining EP Architects as Design Director was a natural step for me. The practice’s commitment to thoughtful, people-centred design, low-carbon outcomes, and collaboration across education, rail, and heritage projects strongly aligns with my own values and experience.

Outside of work, I value time with my family, enjoy playing rugby, and have a keen interest in good coffee, food, and live music.
